Tool Lanyards

Lanyard is a cord or a strap that is worn around the neck and is attached to an object. The object may be a cell phone, a whistle, an identification badge, a key or some other small object. The object is such that it has to be used frequently and retrieving it frequently from where it is stored on the person can be a tedious process.

The fundamental objective of the lanyard is to prevent this inconvenience. Furthermore it can also be used to prevent the object from being lost or misused. Alternatively lanyards can make excellent advertising tools when a name or a customized logo is printed on the strap. Lanyards are seen at many places like schools, business places, hospitals, at special events conventions, reunions and in many recreational activities.

Need For Tool lanyards

At many places work is conducted at high elevations like construction sites and dam sites. The tools used by the workers are usually made from steel and if the same were to fall from a great height it would seriously, and sometimes fatally, injure pedestrians or other workers who may happen to be at the wrong place at the right time.

Data from the emergency department records of the United States 24 hour emergency departments indicate that in 1999 around 37 % of non fatal occupational injuries and illnesses treated were due to the result of falling objects from considerable altitude. The corresponding figure for Great Britain, for the year 2001 / 2002, was 22,584 of which 2,265 were the direct result of dropped hand held objects.

These accidents and consequent injuries are avoidable and measures like placing warning signs in the vulnerable area below and wearing of personal protection equipment may not be as full a measure as nipping the problem in the bud. These drops also result in the loss of productivity as the worker has to replace the tool and this action results in loss of time and therefore productivity.

Common Design of a Tool Lanyard

There are several types of tool lanyards. The most common tool lanyards feature a stretchable cord that is surrounded by tubular nylon webbing and is stitched at both ends. The lanyard is attached to the worker with an aluminum or plastic carabiner and the tools are attached with an adjustable barrel lock.

The cord can stretch up to 42 inches for standard functions and 54 inches for the extended size. The cord is kept stretchable to allow full range of motion for the worker to move the tool.
